Many problems encountered running Geac Advance GUI software on older Windows operating systems are caused by a lace of specific Microsoft database handling tools for Windows. What are called Microsoft Data Access Components(MDAC), and the Jet Engine for web database access were added to Windows late in the Windows 98 period. Geac Advance GUI software must have these components to operate properly. If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP you do not need to worry, these components are build into your Windows operating system. Some Windows 98 also has the components build in. Some software installations load the components as well. But if you are loading Advance GUI software on a PC with Windows 95, 98 or NT 4, you may have to load the MDAC and Jet components yourself to ge the GUI software to work. Most commonly, if Adv GUI software seems to have loaded correctly, and AdvPac works but any attempt to enter other modules gives you an error saying that any "mdb" database file can not be loaded, this is a sign that you need to load the MDAC and Jet data components. This is not a hard task. The component install software is downloaded from the Microsoft website. Then you just run each install executible on your PC to install the components. Things on the Microsoft site change often, but a the present time here are the steps. 1. go to WWW.microsoft.com/data. 2. find the link to the most recent version and service pack for MDAC. This is currently MDAC 2.7, service pack 1. Select MDAC 2.7 service pack 1. On its page, insure that this is the right MDAC install for your operating system. It covers Win98, Win98se, WinME, WinNT4 and Win2000. 3. Select the download option in the top right on the page, and download the MDAC install to a location on your pc. 4. run the MDAC install executible on your pc. It will load necessary components and prompt you for any necessary actions. 5. Go to www.microsoft.com/download. There is a select box on this page with default "All". Open this select box. Locate and select the "Jet Database Engine". Click "Go" to go the the Jet Engine download page. 6. On the Jet Engine download page, locate the Jet download for your operating system. Most people will use Jet4.0.6226 sp6 9x-n4, or Win 95, Win 98, Win 98se, WinNT4. 7. Click on the Jet Engine download you need, and download the file to your pc. 8. Double click the downloaded Jet Engine executible on your pc to install the jet engine components on your pc. 9. Shut down all software, then reboot your pc. 10. When your pc is restarted, Adv GUI software should now work.
