Novanet Now Providing Digital Access to Nova Scotia

Novanet, the consortium of academic libraries in Nova Scotia which brings resources and services to the Nova Scotian academic community and beyond, is now providing digital access to government publications archived by the Nova Scotia Legislative Library. Nova Scotian government documents that existed digitally from 2007–2013 are now available through Novanet with material from 2014–2016 currently being added. The Hansard Proceedings (verbatim record of the Debates of the House of Assembly) will also be available soon.
“Novanet offers users free document delivery services with access to over four million print materials and hundreds of millions of articles from academic libraries across the province. Thanks to this recent project, Novanet collection searches are now enriched with the addition of these important government documents. It is a perfect fit with Novanet’s core activities,” said Tanja Harrison, chair of Novanet and university librarian at Mount Saint Vincent University.
Nova Scotians with a public library card can register at any one of the 28 Novanet libraries and gain access to Novanet collections. Materials can be borrowed at one institution and returned to another through Libraries Nova Scotia’s Borrow Anywhere, Return Anywhere (BARA) program.
“Novanet is pleased to be partnering with the Nova Scotian Legislative Library to bring these government documents to library users in a new way. Anyone who has a library card in Nova Scotia can access Novanet content, so this service is not limited to the academic community, but we expect it will be a benefit to them,” said Bill Slauenwhite, manager of Novanet.
Novanet serves over 50,000 full-time equivalent post-secondary students at 11 institutions and the Nova Scotian community at large. In addition to maintaining a library management system, Novanet is always developing innovative approaches to resource sharing and cooperative collections development among member libraries.
“The typical users of the Legislative Library are Members of the House of Assembly, Legislature staff, and the party caucus offices. We also serve the press and the general public. Making these documents available through Novanet gives us one more way to reach Nova Scotians,” said David McDonald, legislative librarian.
